Ava Roasteria is one of my favorite places to go with my girlfriend to drink, chat and get really good cake. It's open 24 hours so it's perfect for any schedule (mine's unusual!) - and there's live music on Friday and Saturday which can be too loud, or actually pretty enjoyable.
I recommend the Dark Chocolate Mocha, though it may add a couple of pounds to your belly if you don't watch yourself - the drink is addicting. Also, the Breve they make is excellent. Coffee isn't too expensive here, just a little over $4 for a medium cup. The pastries are priced a bit high for my liking, but they are well prepared...since the Ava company also does catering, why wouldn't they be good?
The outdoor seating and decorative stream are very nice to look at during a hot day, and on a cooler day such as this one it is a nice distraction from the traffic directly over your shoulder.
Lastly, you'll find this shop packed with laptop and phone users, so if you intend to catch up on homework or overtime, this is the place where you'll blend in. And there's free wi-fi for customers.
If you're considering Starbucks, I would be so bold as to suggest skipping that and going over to Ava in Beaverton - if it's not too far out of your way. Ava's got a natural charm and the staff is friendly. A worthy cup of joe, and then some.
Note: Seating can be troublesome on Saturday evenings and Sunday evenings.
